The Myth of Perfect Timing: Why You Need to Start Before You’re Read

We all have something we want to accomplish. A dream we want to chase. A goal we want to achieve. Even something as simple as a to-do list item that’s been written on the post it note for far too long. Despite this, how often do we say to ourselves, “I’ll do it when…”?

When things settle down.
When I have more money.
When the timing feels right.

Consider this: the timing will never be perfect.

Life will always be busy. There will always be responsibilities, distractions, and reasons to wait. If we’re constantly waiting for ideal conditions, those desires we carry, the ones that light up our hearts, may never come to be.

Why Waiting Doesn’t Work

Waiting feels safe, but it also keeps us stuck. It tricks us into believing we’re preparing when really, we’re postponing. The longer we wait, the heavier our dreams become, and often, the more unattainable they feel.

Clarity and confidence don’t arrive before we start, they show up after we take that first step. They continually show up as we move forward.

Simply begin, even if it’s messy or small. That’s where your power lies.

  • One paragraph written leads to a page.
  • One workout leads to a routine.
  • One phone call leads to a new opportunity.

Action builds momentum. Perfection does not.

Imperfect progress will take you further than waiting for the stars to align.

The Excuses We Tell Ourselves

“I’ll do it when I have more time.”
“I’ll do it after I do more research.”
“I’ll do it when I feel ready.”

You learn by doing. You grow into readiness. And time won’t magically appear, you create it by prioritizing what matters most.

Starting Now is a Gift to Your Future Self

I’m closing in on 50 years old and only recently have I truly learned to “do it now.” When I look back, I can’t help but wonder how much further along I would be if I would have started earlier, how much I could have grown, and how many experiences I might have had if I hadn’t waited for the “perfect time” or all of life’s circumstances to align. Alas, regret only has power if we let it. I can’t go back and change the years I spent waiting, preparing, procrastinating, but I can choose differently now. It’s never too late to choose forward momentum.

And so can you.

Imagine looking back five years from now. Will you be grateful you started, however small, or regretful that you didn’t?

When we start now, we create a story of experiences, not excuses. We create a life filled with lessons, growth, and progress, instead of “what ifs” and “somedays.”

A Gentle Challenge

What’s that one thing you’ve been waiting to begin? Not when life is calmer. Not when you feel perfectly prepared. Not when everything falls into place.

Start now. Take the smallest step. Send the email. Make the list. Block the time. Begin before it’s perfect, because perfect will never come.

Your future self will thank you for today’s decision to move.

Final Takeaway

The myth of perfect timing holds so many of us back. But when you stop waiting and start before you’re ready, you discover that imperfect action creates the momentum you’ve been missing.”
