Beyond the Picture: Choosing Experience Over Regret

“The photo just doesn’t do it justice.”

We’ve all said it. Maybe it was standing in front of a breathtaking sunrise, watching the ocean glitter under the sun, or trying to capture the raw emotion of a once-in-a-lifetime moment. The picture is beautiful, but it can never quite capture the way it felt, the warmth in your chest, the awe in your soul, the sense that you were alive and present in experiencing something bigger than yourself.

Life is not meant to be observed from behind the lens. It’s meant to be lived.

I lived at the beach for three years before I finally got up early enough to watch the sunrise over the Atlantic. I kept saying, “I want to go,” “I’m going to go” but it was just too easy to hit the snooze button. One day, I told myself I was done sleeping in. I got up early, made a cup of coffee, and walked down to the beach. The sky was breathtaking that morning and I realized the most gorgeous and most peaceful part of sunrise came in the moments just before the sun broke the horizon. Then suddenly, there it was. I cried. Tears came out of nowhere and started streaming down my face.

I took dozens of pictures that morning, but not one of them comes close to capturing how I felt sitting there, alive, present, and in awe. When I look at them now I am reminded; life is not meant to be observed from behind the lens. It’s meant to be lived.

We all have our own version of that sunrise, something we keep putting off, telling ourselves we’ll get to it someday. But someday will rarely come unless we choose it.

Why Experiences Matter More Than Playing It Safe

So many of us spend years staying behind the scenes. We hesitate. We wait for the “right” time. We tell ourselves we’re not ready, or we’ll get around to it. But one day, we’ll look back and realize the only thing we regret is the life we didn’t allow ourselves to live and the chances we wish we would have taken.

It’s not the missed photo op that lingers in our hearts, it’s the missed experience. The sunset we never stopped to watch. The dream we never chased. The risk we never took.

Taking Chances is Where Life Expands

Courage doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like:

  • Saying yes to an opportunity even though you feel unprepared.
  • Trying something new, knowing you might stumble.
  • Speaking your truth when it feels easier to stay quiet.
  • Traveling solo, launching a business, writing the book, or simply raising your hand in the meeting.

These moments are like stepping into a photo that could never do justice to what you’ll actually feel. Because the richness of life is not in perfection, it’s in presence.

Don’t Let Fear Write Your Story

Fear will always whisper: Stay safe. Don’t risk it. What if you fail? Instead ask yourself this: What if the chance I take becomes the very thing that lights up my soul?

Years from now, you won’t remember the comfort of staying in the familiar. You’ll remember living without regret. Choosing experiences over fear. The moments you stepped forward. You’ll remember the way it felt to be alive, unfiltered, unscripted, unapologetic.

Live Boldly, Not Regretfully

The photos we take are beautiful reminders, but they’ll never replace the lived experience that comes from taking chances in life. Instead of letting your life become a collection of “almosts” and “what ifs” let it be a gallery of lived moments. Bold chances. Brave decisions. Memories that make you say, “The picture doesn’t do it justice, you just had to be there.”

Journal Prompt: What’s one chance I’ve been too afraid to take? What would it look like to step into it anyway?

Affirmation: I choose experiences over regrets. I am brave enough to live fully.
